In town for the 2008 Jazz Festival, Dr. Scott McCaul and Kim McKean visited with Professor Larry Byers.  Dr. McCaul received his undergraduate degree at Tulane and went on to medical school. After medical school returned to Tulane and postdoc with Dr. Byers. Dr. McCaul is a pulmonolgist who lives in San Diego.   Kim McKean received her undergraduate degree at Tulane while working for Professor William Alworth.

Yaw-Kuen Li (graduated 1991), Professor Larry Byers was Li's Research Advisor.   Yaw-Kuen Li  is now Chairman of the Department of Applied Chemistry, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan

Jeanie Osborn, who received her Ph.D in Chemistry  from Tulane in 1986, recently visited the department

and Professor Larry Byers.  Jeanie works for the Naval Research Lab (NRL) in Washington, DC.  

Scott M. Grayson, who received his B.S. in Chemistry from Tulane in 1996 joined the faculty of the Chemistry department in June, 2005.

William F. Carroll, Jr., who received his M.S. in Chemistry from Tulane in 1975, has been voted president-elect of the American Chemical Society for 2004. William F. Carroll, Jr. of Occidental Chemical Corporation (Dallas, TX), will serve as ACS president in 2005 and as a member of the ACS Board of Directors from 2004 to 2006.

Edwin H. Walker, Jr., who received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Tulane in 1998, was featured in an article in "Black Issues in Higher Education".

C and E News reports that Tom Archibald, who received his Ph.D. In organic chemistry in 1967 from Tulane University, has been appointed vice president for research and technology at Rhodia Chirex in Boston.

John C. Trebellas, who received his Ph.D. from Tulane in 1965, and his wife, Katherine Bergeret (Kay) who received her B.S. In Physics from Newcomb College in 1960 and her M.S. In chemistry at Tulane in 1964 , visited the Department in September and presented us with a check to help support our graduate programs. The generous support that John Trebellas and his wife have given the department over the past few years is multiplied since John's employer ( Nalco/Exxon Energy Chemicals) matches their donations. Each year we use the "Trebellas" money to pay part of the recruiting costs for the graduate program, to pay expenses for advanced graduate students to attend meetings and present their results, and to give a cash reward of $100 to graduate students selected each semester for doing outstanding jobs as TAs in the general chemistry, the organic chemistry, or the advanced chemistry teaching laboratories.

The Department also wants to acknowledge an endowment from the estate of Arlo Harris. Arlo Harris also received his Ph.D. In chemistry from Tulane in 1965. For several years prior to his death Dr. Harris provided an annual gift to the Department and left an additional amount in his will for an endowed fellowship. The Department persuaded the University to accept that this endowment should be used to provide a fellowship each year for a deserving graduate student in chemistry. Last year the Arlo Harris fellowship award was made to Karthikeyan Sivasubramanian . Mr. Sivasubramanian was recommended by the Graduate Affairs Committee as the graduate student with the best overall record in his first year.

The Department also awards a Hans B. Jonassen Fellowship award each year from an endowment set up by the friends, family , and many students of Professor Jonassen. This endowment is also used to provide a fellowship each year for a deserving graduate student in chemistry. Last year the Hans Jonassen fellowship was awarded to Robert Boyle. Mr. Boyle was recommended by the Graduate Affairs Committee for his outstanding work as a Ph.D. Candidate in the Inorganic Division.
